A title change has taken place on tonight’s March episode of WWE SmackDown at the Lenovo Center in Raleigh, North Carolina.
The first match for the night saw the WWE Tag Team Championship put on the line.
Defending on behalf of the MFTs tonight were Tama Tonga and JC Mateo, but they were unsuccessful in doing so and there are new titleholders.
R-Truth and Damian Priest are officially the new WWE Tag Team Champions, scoring a win against Tonga and Mateo tonight.
The win came after the Wyatt Sicks came out to ringside to distract and brawl with the MFTs, continuing their feud that has been going for a number of months now.
This was only Truth and Priest’s third match as a duo, and they are now already the WWE Tag Team Champions.
Their on-screen relationship does go all the way back to 2023 and Priest’s days in Judgment Day when Truth was trying to get into the group, with them recently reuniting on SmackDown as babyfaces.
The conclusion of the match after the Wyatt Sicks’ involvement saw Truth pin Mateo after an Attitude Adjustment, which he has been using as a tribute to his “childhood hero” John Cena.
The MFTs had been utilizing the ‘Freebird rule’ with the WWE Tag Team Title, as it was Tama Tonga and Solo Sikoa who initially won the championship from the Wyatts in January.
The Dwindling WWE Tag Team Title Scene On SmackDown
Focus has faded on the WWE SmackDown tag team division this year and in recent months after it was widely praised for a while due to the likes of the Motor City Machine Guns, Fraxiom, DIY, the Street Profits and more regularly putting on highly praised matches in 2024 and 2025.
However, as evidenced by a new and somewhat makeshift duo now holding the WWE Tag Team Title, it isn’t a top priority in the company at the moment.
The Profits haven’t been on TV for months, DIY’s Tommaso Ciampa left WWE, and the other teams have next to no momentum right now, as focus shifted to the championship scene revolving around the Wyatt Sicks vs the MFTs rather than the division as a whole.
It seems unlikely the championship will be defended at WrestleMania 42 unless there are some high profile developments in the next couple of weeks.
