Tyler Perry Brings the Franchise Back After 16 Years With a Messy, Funny and Surprisingly Reflective Reunion

Sixteen years after Why Did I Get Married Too?, Tyler Perry brings the franchise back with Why Did I Get Married Again? — a reunion that proves these couples may have gotten older, but they certainly haven’t gotten any less complicated.
Released on Netflix September 9, 2026, the 109-minute comedy-drama reunites much of the original ensemble and moves the action to Lake Como, Italy, where Marcus and Angela’s daughter is preparing to get married.
The result is a movie that doesn’t quite recapture the emotional impact of the original films, but it does understand why audiences became invested in these characters in the first place.
It’s messy. It’s melodramatic. It’s occasionally hilarious.
And, at its best, it’s surprisingly honest about how the mistakes parents make can shape their children.
The Reunion Works
One of the biggest challenges with bringing back a franchise after 16 years is convincing audiences that the characters still have something worth saying.
Perry largely succeeds.
Marcus and Angela, Terry and Diane, Sheila and Troy, and Mike all return with years of history between them. The characters aren’t simply repeating the same problems from the earlier movies.
