Robert MacIntyre’s middle finger meltdown at Masters leads to rebuke

But the rules of etiquette are well known at golf's first major of the year and Masters officials apparently weren't happy with MacIntyre's conduct after an on-course meltdown during the first round on April 9.

Robert MacIntyre’s first-round scorecard at the 2026 Masters featured one birdie, three bogeys, one double bogey and a quadruple bogey that left him so frustrated, he flipped the bird at the entire course that was so tormenting him.

But the rules of etiquette are well known at golf’s first major of the year and Masters officials apparently weren’t happy with MacIntyre’s conduct after an on-course meltdown during the first round on April 9.

MacIntyre was “reprimanded” after he gestured with his middle finger towards the green when he hit a shot into the water on No. 15 and used inappropriate language, according to a new report from The Scotsman newspaper based in MacIntyre’s native Scotland.MASTERS CUT LINE TRACKER: Who will make, miss cut at Augusta National?

The 29-year-old struggled throughout Thursday’s round after starting out with a birdie at No. 2. He had bogeys on the fifth and six holes and a double bogey on No. 9, and his problems boiled over when his approach shot landed on the 15th green only to roll back into the pond.

That’s when MacIntyre decided to raise his middle finger into the air in the direction of the green. It was perhaps even more noticeable since MacIntyre is playing in a featured group alongside Scottie Scheffler and Gary Woodland during the opening two rounds of this year’s Masters.

After a drop, MacIntyre hit another ball in the water and his sixth shot ended up over the green. He eventually finished with a quadruple bogey nine on his scorecard, part of a first round in which he finished with an 8-over par 80. MacIntyre also reportedly used foul language on No. 12 and No. 13 on Thursday and slammed his club into the ground after a second shot he didn’t like at No. 17, according to ESPN.

MacIntyre’s second round didn’t get off to a great start, either. He carded a double bogey on his first hole on April 10 when he needed two shots to get out of a greenside bunker and sits at +10 for the tournament.

His reaction to another mistake was muted this time. Message received.
