A St. Paul man has been charged in a robbery and shooting earlier in March in Minneapolis that left a man with life-threatening injuries after being shot in the head.
Ajay Joseph Meyer is charged with one count of first-degree assault and one count of first-degree aggravated robbery.
According ot the criminal complaint, on March 7, police found an adult male with a gunshot wound to the back of the head lying on the front steps of an apartment building when they responded to a report of a shooting at 15th Street East and Nicollet Avenue.
The victim was taken to the hospital with serious brain injuries and remains in serious condition nearly a week and a half later.
Surveillance video from the area shows a vehicle arriving and parking near the location of the shooting, and four men exit it, including Meyers, the complaint says.
A second vehicle showed up and parked next to theirs. A man from that vehicle exits and is handed what appears to be a semiautomatic handgun by one of the men from the first vehicle, the document states.
Video shows the men approach the victim, and some of the men “tussle” with him. One of the men hits the victim, and then a single muzzle flash is seen near victim’s head and he falls down, sending the other men running back their vehicles and leave, the criminal complaint says.
Police executed a search warrant on March 13 at a home in Inver Grove Heights, where they arrested Meyers and his brother, who was in the vehicle with him at the scene.
Police found a handgun and 9-millimeter cartridge at the home, which are being forensically tested.
Meyers is in custody. On Tuesday at a first hearing, a judge set his bail at $300,000 with no conditions or $200,000 with conditions. His next court appearance is scheduled for April 14.
