James Pearce Jr, an NFL star with plenty of potential and attention on his future, has reportedly been blocked from joining the Atlanta Falcons offseason program. And the reason is not a minor scheduling conflict or a missed flight. No, it’s much heavier than that.
We’re talking felony charges and battery allegations that tend to pause things immediately.
Let’s be real. Offseason programs are usually about workouts, playbooks, conditioning, and getting in sync with teammates. It’s where players build chemistry and coaches evaluate talent. It is not supposed to double as a legal case subplot. But here we are.
Pearce is facing three felony charges: aggravated battery with a deadly weapon, fleeing and eluding police, and resisting an officer with violence to his or her person.
Pearce – who last year signed a $16.8million contract with Atlanta – also faces a charge of aggravated stalking.
While facing charges, Pearce reportedly will not be present at the Falcons’ voluntary offseason program, which begins on Tuesday, according to Ian Rapoport.
According to arrest records, Pearce fled the scene after being confronted by police. He is then said to have crashed his car at an intersection before attempting to run away on foot. Remarkable images emerged on social media shortly after, showing six police officers pinning Pearce to the ground while trying to detain him.
Pearce and Jackson – who plays for the Los Angeles Sparks – reportedly dated for around three years, only to separate shortly before the alleged incident. She filed for a protective order in February, with the WNBA star telling a court that she ‘feared for her life.’
In court documents, seen by the Daily Mail, which were filed two days after Pearce Jr’s arrest, Jackson wrote that Pearce ‘verbally and physically abused me on more than one occasion.’ He was also accused of threatening to kill her and place a bag over her head, according to the court filing.
An NFL spokesperson, meanwhile, told ESPN: ‘We continue to monitor all developments in the matter which remains under review of the personal conduct policy.’
So while the Falcons continue preparing for the season, one thing is clear: this is not the kind of offseason storyline anyone hoped for. And until the situation is resolved, Pearce’s football plans will have to wait on the sidelines, right alongside the speculation.
