Javontae Simms (Hennepin County Jail)
A sibling argument that turned deadly this week in Minneapolis was over a dirty kitchen, according to newly filed court documents.
Prosecutors on Friday charged 23-year-old Javontae Deshawn Simms with the murder of his brother.
The filing comes a day after Minneapolis police were called to a home on the corner of North Girard and 30th avenues just after 3 a.m.
Inside, officers found Simms’ brother unconscious, with his girlfriend holding a cloth on a wound under his left arm. Despite aid at the scene, the man was pronounced dead, police say.
Charging documents note that two women in the home told investigators that Simms, whose address is listed in Chicago, got upset with his brother for not cleaning up the kitchen and picking up after himself. The brother’s girlfriend said they had just made food and were still eating when Simms first got upset.
Simms initially went downstairs after confronting his brother but then came back and stabbed his brother, the women added, saying the brothers apparently shoved each other but they then saw a bloody knife in Simms’ hand and his brother said, “He just stabbed me.”
Police found Simms hiding under the stairs with a panel propped against them to create a blind spot, a criminal complaint adds.
After his arrest, Simms initially claimed he was trying to “fake stab” his brother before later saying he told his brother he’d stab him and his brother then ran into the knife, the complaint states.
Simms is scheduled to make his first court appearance on Monday.
