Randy Orton appeared on tonight’s WWE SmackDown and offered an in-depth explanation for his attack on Cody Rhodes last week.
Orton made his entrance and grabbed the steel chair he used to attack Rhodes, sitting on it in the middle of the ring for his promo.
The theme of what Orton said was what he wants his WWE legacy to ultimately be when he retires.
He said that it brings a smile to his face when he hears the crowd sing his entrance music, and he signs autographs for the young fans, as he has been doing for the past few years.
However, that smile is an “empty” smile.
Orton said he doesn’t want his legacy to be putting smiles on kids’ faces – he wants it to be the number of WWE World Championship wins he picks up.
Orton currently stands at 14 World Title wins, in joint third place level with Triple H, behind Ric Flair’s 16 and John Cena’s 17.
He also pointed out that it was Cody Rhodes who said he wanted the old Randy Orton, the best Orton, the Orton who hears voices in his head, and that’s exactly what Orton gave him last week.
He finished his comments by reciting the lyrics to his Voices entrance theme, saying:
“I hear voices in my head, they council me, they understand, they talk to me, and they tell me that I’m going to beat Cody Rhodes for the WWE Championship… in the main event of WrestleMania.”
Despite his comments about not wanting to please the fans, and his ‘heel turn’ against Rhodes, the crowd continued to cheer and chant for Orton tonight.
As things stand, The Rhodes vs Orton WWE Championship match is expected to be the main event of night one of WrestleMania 42, with the World Heavyweight Championship match between CM Punk and Roman Reigns set to main event night two.
Randy Orton Next Match Before Cody Rhodes At WrestleMania
It appears Randy Orton has a match set up before he faces Cody Rhodes at WrestleMania in four weeks.
After his promo tonight, Orton bumped into Matt Cardona backstage, who backed up his friend Cody Rhodes and questioned Orton about his comments and actions the past couple of weeks.
Orton called Cardona a “mark ass stooge” and an “indie nerd,” before striking him to the ground.
Therefore, it appears Orton vs Cardona could be a match that takes place some time soon on WWE SmackDown before we get to WrestleMania.
UPDATE: Orton attacked Cardona and potentially injured him later tonight, so Cardona may have been written out of action for a while rather than setting up a match.
