1-on-1 with Lisa Demuth
In many political races around the country, an endorsement from President Donald Trump is enough to put a candidate over the top. But that was not the case in the Minnesota governor’s race, where Lisa Demuth defeated the Trump-endorsed Mike Lindell by 11 points, or 45,000 votes.
Demuth told 5 EYEWITNESS NEWS on Friday she thinks Minnesota voters were more focused on a change in state leadership after years of fraud scandals.
“Fraud is something that is brought up in every conversation in every place in the state,” she said. “They are tired of fraud.”
But Demuth also knows Democrats will keep portraying her as a potential “rubber stamp” for Trump if she’s elected because they claim she won’t identify any issue where she disagrees with his policies.
When asked about that, she somewhat tongue-in-cheek says she doesn’t think Canada should become our 51st state as one example of where they disagree. More seriously, she says she might be growing in disagreement with the president on tariffs.
“I was down at Farmfest just a week and a half ago, and as I was hearing about the pressures that are put on our farmers and those in agriculture with the tariffs, I would say the tariffs do serve a purpose, but I think that it’s maybe time to maybe look at doing something a little bit different,” she says, “to make sure our farmers are getting fair prices and able to do the things they need to do to provide food and resources for both our state, our country and really, the world.”
When asked if that’s a growing area of disagreement with the president, she said, “I am starting to see that a little differently as time goes on, yes.”
As for whether she will seek Trump’s endorsement in the general election, she says “we’ll see as time goes on.”
As of Friday, Mike Lindell had still not conceded the race to Demuth, and he told 5 EYEWITNESS NEWS he’ll announce something on Monday or Tuesday.
