Some Minneapolis homeowners could see property tax increases above the citywide proposal under Mayor Jacob Frey’s budget plan.
Frey has proposed an 11.3% property tax increase to help close the city’s $60 million budget gap, but some parts of Minneapolis are expected to pay more than others.
Gus Breiland and his wife, Lisa Samuelson, said they have lived in Ward 12 in southeast Minneapolis for the last 28 years. The area includes Minnehaha Falls and riverfront access and could see a property tax increase of at least 20% under the mayor’s plan because of what the city calls estimated market value changes of residential homes.
“It’s 20 minutes from everything, we feel it’s a very safe neighborhood, we like the proximity to the lakes and what it has to offer in the area,” said Samuelson.
The report said Ward 12 is expected to see the highest rate increase of any ward in Minneapolis. Breiland and Samuelson said they hope that tax bill comes down and said the citywide 11.3% increase sounds better than more than 20%.
“Focus on residents, focus on the people that want to be here,” said Breiland.
“I just think the city just has to figure out a way to get Revenue other than the homeowners,” said Samuelson.
Minneapolis’s final city budget will be ready in December.
