Mickiah Latrell Jackson will spend 40 years in prison for the shooting death of a man just over a year ago in south Minneapolis.
Jackson was charged with one count of second-degree murder and one count of prohibited possession of a firearm. A jury found him guilty on both charges.
A judge sentenced him on Monday. He will be credited for 371 days already served.
On April 30 at around 7:47 p.m., officers responded to a shooting on the 3000 block of 15th Avenue South and found a man with multiple gunshot wounds who was later pronounced dead.
The man was later identified as 51-year-old Derrick Lamont Ewing.
Through the investigation, officers found surveillance footage from nearby businesses from the time of the shooting, which showed three men, one of whom was identified as Jackson.
Though what the video showed and the investigators’ talking to witnesses, they determined Jackson to be the shooter.
“My thoughts are with Derrick Ewing’s family and loved ones. Derrick should still be alive,” Hennepin County Attorney Mary Moriarty said. “This was a terrible act of violence and today’s sentence ensures Mr. Jackson will not commit additional harm.”
