Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey laid out his vision for the next four years during the state of the city address on Tuesday morning.
He highlighted efforts to strengthen public safety here in Minneapolis – which has been one of his top priorities.
The city has also been working to tackle addiction in Uptown and bring revitalization to the area.
In an effort to bring people back to Uptown, Frey announced that there will now be free parking on Fridays.
As the city has been taking a collaborative approach to target crime, applications to become a Minneapolis police officer are up 200%.
Frey also mentioned his goal to expand affordable housing, including making it easier to build accessory dwellings in your backyard.
He spoke about the challenges Minneapolis has endured lately, saying there’s a responsibility to still do better even when not in crisis.
“People need to be safe, and they need to feel safe. That requires a comprehensive safety approach, which in turn requires a fully staffed, fully functioning police department that delivers,” Frey said.
The mayor is now in his third term in office, after being re-elected in November 2025, with nearly 42 percent of first-choice votes.
