An assault suspect is still on the loose after a northwest metro police chase and search prompted a local elementary school to go into a “secure mode” on Tuesday.
Hennepin County law enforcement chasing a possibly armed domestic assault suspect contacted Wright County at around 7:45 a.m., saying the suspect was crossing into Delano on Highway 12, the Wright County Sheriff’s Office says.
Authorities say several citizens also called to report the suspect driving recklessly through Delano, Montrose and into Waverly, where the suspect apparently abandoned the stolen vehicle.
Deputies, along with a K-9 unit and drone team, responded to the area of Highway 12 by Atlantic Avenue in Waverly to search for the suspect.
As a precaution, the nearby Humphrey Elementary School was moved into a secure mode in the 8 o’clock hour, the school district confirmed.
That emergency protocol lasted about 90 minutes before the school lifted the alert due to law enforcement clearing the incident. However, the district said a scheduled kindergarten event was canceled, as was afternoon preschool.
No other information about the suspect was immediately available, but as of 1 p.m., the sheriff’s office said the suspect is no longer believed to be in the county.
