Triple H has shared his honest thoughts on CM Punk and Roman Reigns’ “epic” WWE WrestleMania 42 Sunday main event in Las Vegas.
Roman Reigns is WWE’s brand new World Heavyweight Champion, as “The OTC” triumphed over CM Punk in the closing match of this year’s WrestleMania.
Delivering over half an hour of compelling in-ring storytelling and action, Punk and Reigns delivered between the ropes on WWE’s grandest stage, and now, for the first time in two years, Reigns carries gold.
Appearing on ESPN SportsCenter immediately after WrestleMania 42, WWE Chief Content Officer Triple H commented on Punk and Reigns’ battle, saying “no one really loses” in a match like that.
Triple H said:
“Just epic. You can see the passion and the pride of two guys that absolutely to the very core of their soul believe that they are the best in the world, and they’re out there to prove it to each other. They’re out there to prove it to the 55,000-plus fans that were here tonight.
“Everything about them screams, ‘I have to show I am the best.’ And you see it all the way down to the end. Knockdown drag out fight that just someone won’t give. And you finally get to the end of it, no one really loses, but Roman Reigns comes out the winner.
“Roman Reigns the new World Heavyweight Champion. To me, one of the greatest matches I’ve ever seen. Doesn’t get bigger.”
Triple H Not Alone In Lauding CM Punk & Roman Reigns’ WrestleMania 42 Clash
In comparison to the divisive WrestleMania 42 Saturday and its main event between Cody Rhodes and Randy Orton, WWE’s second night of action delivered a thoroughly entertaining night of action.
Punk vs. Reigns stands out as one of WWE’s best WrestleMania main events in recent memory, and it has been receiving its flowers in the hours since this weekend’s action wrapped up.
Mark Henry referred to it as the best WrestleMania main event he has seen since The Undertaker vs. Shawn Michaels at WrestleMania 26 in 2010, saying the match was “really elite.”
Speaking on Wrestling Observer Radio, Dave Meltzer said Punk vs. Reigns was “one of the best matches in WrestleMania history,” praising Punk’s performance in particular.
Meltzer said:
“I think it was one of the best matches in WrestleMania history. Great, great match.
“He worked really hard, they both worked hard, but it felt to me like Punk felt this was the biggest match of his career, and Reigns felt that it’s WrestleMania, so I’ll have a big match.
“Punk went far beyond Roman Reigns went in this match; he just dug deeper, he really did. Roman Reigns did what Roman Reigns does.”
