U.S. House Oversight Committee

Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz and Attorney General Keith Ellison will testify before Congress amid federal investigations into widespread fraud allegations in state programs.

Rep. James Comer (R-Ky.), the chairman of the U.S. House Oversight Committee, confirmed Friday that Walz and Ellison have set time to testify before the committee on March 4.

That will be part of the panel’s second hearing in its “Oversight of Fraud and Misuse of Federal Funds in Minnesota” investigation.

Last week, in the committee’s first hearing on Minnesota fraud, former fraud investigator Scott Dexter said the spotlight on day care fraud in the state isn’t new and claimed some former recommendations to improve security were never implemented.

Comer announced the investigation last month, claiming the state tried to cover up fraud and retaliate against whistleblowers. It’s just one part of a federal focus on Minnesota fraud.

5 EYEWITNESS NEWS has reported extensively on fraud allegations and investigations across the state for years.

Now, Walz and Ellison will go before the committee. 5 EYEWITNESS NEWS has reached out to their offices for comment and will update this story if a response is received.

While it’s unlikely the hearings will lead to any real policy changes or prosecutions, there will likely be a lot of rhetorical fireworks.
