Caleb Flynn, the former “American Idol” contestant accused of killing his wife, is facing new charges in the murder case.
The reality-TV singer, who competed on Season 12 of “Idol,” was arrested in February following the death of his wife, Ashley Flynn, who was found dead in the couple’s Ohio home. Flynn, who reported the death to the police, said someone broke into their house and shot Ashley.
He was originally charged with one count of murder and two counts each of felonious assault and tampering with evidence, according to court records.
Following a grand jury indictment on March 18, Flynn has received additional charges that widen the scope of the singer’s alleged crimes.
According to court documents reviewed by USA TODAY on Monday, March 30, Flynn now faces one count of aggravated murder, three counts of murder, two counts of felonious assault, three counts of tampering with evidence and two counts of intimidation of an attorney, victim or witness, bringing his total charges to 11 counts.Need a news break?
Many of the charges include firearm specifications, which indicate that Flynn allegedly “had a firearm on or about his person or under his control while committing the offense and displayed the firearm, brandished the firearm, indicated that he possessed the firearm, or used it to facilitate the offense,” per the indictment.
USA TODAY has reached out to Flynn’s attorney for comment.
Flynn was booked into Ohio’s Miami County Jail on Feb. 19. Court records show his bond was set at $2 million. He pleaded not guilty to his original charges, his attorney, L. Patrick Mulligan, previously confirmed.
A pretrial conference in the case was held on Monday. Flynn’s trial date has been set for April 28, according to local outlets WHIO and WLWT.
Caleb Flynn cries in bodycam video after wife’s alleged murder
Bodycam footage released earlier this month showed the aftermath of Flynn’s wife’s death.
In the footage, obtained by USA TODAY on March 4, an emotional Flynn can be seen reeling from the death of Ashley Flynn. “Oh my God. Is she gone? What do I do with my daughters?” a crying Flynn says as police arrive at his home.
Although much of the video is blurred, Flynn is later identified when police ask for his name.
A police officer later asks Flynn if there are any firearms in the household, and the “Idol” alum says he has several, including a shotgun and a handgun stored in his truck, per the footage.
After Ashley Flynn’s death was confirmed on scene, authorities escorted Flynn outside the house, where he was reunited with his children’s grandmother, as seen in police video.
“The girls don’t know,” a tearful Flynn says as he hugs the woman. “I don’t know what to do.”
How did Caleb Flynn’s wife die?
According to Miami County court records, Flynn is suspected of using a handgun and staging the scene to appear like a burglary. There were signs of what appeared to be forced entry at the house, Dayton, Ohio-area TV station WHIO previously reported.
Additionally, Flynn told 911 dispatchers he didn’t see anyone in the house, but the garage door was open, per the Dayton Daily News. The newspaper reported that an officer who went to the house found a side door to the garage open. The door had a large fridge in front of it that would have needed to be pushed aside to open.Caleb Flynn legal trouble:
The Dayton Daily News said a report from Tipp City police also showed the center console of a truck in the home’s garage was open, and Flynn said that’s where his handgun had been located.
