The late-night hosts suggested the move that appeared to be targeted at programs like ‘The View,’ ‘Late Night With Seth Meyers,’ ‘Jimmy Kimmel Live!’ and ‘The Late Show,’ ending in four months, was less significant than it seemed in a fractured landscape and was more of an “attack on free speech.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Stephen Colbert<\/a>\u00a0on Thursday night weighed in on the Federal Communications Commission\u2019s effort to\u00a0clarify its guidance around political equal time rules, a move that seemed aimed at daytime and late-night talk shows.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

After talk shows\u2019 interviews with politicians long qualified for an exemption to the equal time rule as bona fide news interviews, dating back to a decision about Jay Leno\u2019s\u00a0Tonight Show<\/em>\u00a0in 2006, the\u00a0FCC<\/a>, in\u00a0a new public notice issued Wednesday<\/a>, is changing that approach. The agency said the 2006 decision does not necessarily mean all late-night and daytime show interviews are exempt. Under the FCC\u2019s equal time rule, stations have to offer comparable time and placement to rival candidates regardless of political affiliation, but the burden isn\u2019t on broadcasters. When free time is provided to a candidate, other candidates can submit an equal opportunities request.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThe FCC has not been presented with any evidence that the interview portion of any late-night or daytime television talk show program on air presently would qualify for the bona fide news exemption,\u201d the commission wrote on Wednesday. \u201cMoreover, a program that is motivated by partisan purposes, for example, would not be entitled to an exemption under long-standing FCC precedent.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Though Kimmel\u00a0commented on the news on Wednesday night<\/a>, Colbert waited to address the development until Thursday, and he initially highlighted how, despite headlines focused on how the new FCC guidance seemed aimed at\u00a0The\u00a0Late Show<\/a><\/em>\u00a0as well as\u00a0Jimmy Kimmel<\/a>\u00a0Live!<\/em>\u00a0and\u00a0Late Night With Seth Meyers<\/em>,\u00a0The Late Show<\/em>\u00a0is ending in May<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWhat? What? A new crackdown on\u00a0late-night TV<\/a>? That has enormous implications for me for four more months,\u201d Colbert said before seemingly addressing Kimmel, who\u00a0recently re-upped for another year<\/a>. \u201cGood luck, Jimmy! See ya, suckers!\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Colbert added, \u201cSo, let\u2019s talk about these new crackdown rules that my lawyer warned me not to talk about. The FCC is announcing plans to enforce long-dormant rules on appearances by political candidates on network talk shows. Oh, no. They\u2019ve awakened the long-dormant rules, not seen since the mind-bending horrors of the pre-Euclidean variety show \u2018Cthulhu Tonight!\u2019 This is clearly an attempt to silence me, Jimmy [and] Seth [Meyers].\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

But Colbert suggested their programs weren\u2019t as influential as the FCC\u2019s new guidance might suggest.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Speaking to the FCC, Colbert said, \u201cI\u2019m flattered you think that appearing on my show has the power to affect\u00a0politics<\/a>\u00a0in any way. OK? I\u2019ve been doing this job for 21 years, and let me tell you something, buddy, if our government had turned out the way I had chosen, you would not have the power to make this announcement.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Kimmel, meanwhile, spent several minutes at the end of his monologue explaining the history of the equal time requirements and again suggesting any attempts at a crackdown would be less significant in a fractured landscape.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Calling FCC commissioner Brendan Carr<\/a> Trump\u2019s \u201clittle ferret in the FCC,\u201d who \u201cis doing everything he can<\/a> to shut us up \u2018the easy way or the hard way<\/a>,’\u201d Kimmel bashed the move as Carr\u2019s \u201csneaky little way of keeping viewpoints that aren\u2019t his off the air\u201d and his \u201clatest attack on free speech.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cAnd it\u2019s a joke, because this isn\u2019t the \u201950s anymore,\u201d Kimmel said. \u201cBack then, there were only three major networks. Now we\u2019ve got cable, we\u2019ve got streaming, we have satellite, podcasts, and social media. There are thousands of outlets now. Broadcast TV used to account for 100 percent of viewing. Now, it\u2019s like 20 percent. There are so many channels, some of them doing 24\/7 Trump programming: Fox News, Newsmax, One America News, Real America\u2019s Voice. None of them are required to give equal time, but we are because we use the public airways.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He added, \u201cEqual time was designed to limit how much influence broadcasters have over public opinion. But we\u2019re not the only thing on television anymore. We\u2019re a small fish now. We used to be the whole pond. Now we\u2019re part of like this enormous Las Vegas buffet. We\u2019re the mashed potatoes on the buffet, and now the FCC wants to mash us even more. They\u2019re mashing our potatoes.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI have no idea what the outcome of this is going to be. We will find out,\u201d Kimmel continued.\u201dIt is another example of this administration trying to squash anyone who doesn\u2019t support them by following the rules.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

With the midterm elections looming in 2026, the FCC\u2019s new guidance could make talk shows carefully consider their bookings as politicians running for office seek media appearances.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
