The University of Minnesota has parted ways with longtime women’s hockey coach Brad Frost, Athletic Director Mark Coyle announced Monday.
Frost, who led the Gophers for 19 seasons, guided the program to four national championships and multiple WCHA titles. Coyle said the decision followed a comprehensive review of the program’s performance on and off the ice.
“Brad is a great coach and an even better person, which is why today is extremely difficult,” Coyle said in a statement. “We expect to contend at the highest level in every aspect of women’s college hockey, and right now we are not doing that.”
Frost took over the program in 2007 and coached several of the sport’s top players while leading Minnesota to NCAA titles in 2012, 2013, 2015 and 2016. Coyle thanked him for his nearly two decades with the Gophers.
“I want to thank Brad for leading our team with class and integrity for 19 years,” Coyle said. “We are grateful for his service and wish Brad all the best in his future endeavors.”
Coyle said the university will begin a national search immediately to hire the next head coach.
“While change like this is never easy, now is the right time for a new voice to lead our program,” he said. “This is the best coaching job in women’s hockey.”
