On Thursday, the NBA sent a memo to all 30 teams updating policies during the league’s hiatus.
Here are the key points, per reporting by ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski and Tim Bontemps:
- Effective Friday, March 20, team facilities will close to players and staff indefinitely
- Players are barred from traveling outside of North America
- Players will still be permitted to travel within North America, but the league’s stated preference is for players to stay in their respective markets
- According to Bontemps, players are also “prohibited from using public health clubs, fitness centers, gyms, college facilities, or the like”
This memo comes four days after the NBA’s last policy update, which permitted individual workouts (with necessary precautions) at organization facilities but disallowed team practices.
These moves feel necessary and inevitable, given the high-risk nature of basketball in relation to the spread of COVID-19. They also underscore that this is only the beginning.
